Indicator summary The National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) released the final results of the Population and Housing Census 2010 data on demographic, social and economic characteristics of basic population and housing. INEGI president, Eduardo Sojo, presented information on the demographic, cultural, economic and housing characteristics, showing the reality of Mexico at the time of lifting of the Population and Housing Census 2010, where there were 112 million 336 thousand 538 people, of which 51.2% are women and 48.8% men. Demographic characteristics He emphasizes that the age structure of the population has been transformed and demographic changes over time are evident. The 2010 Census population pyramid widens in the center and is reduced at the base: the proportion of children has decreased and the proportion of adults has increased. Housing The housing stock as a whole is 35 million 617 thousand 724 homes. Most of it is inhabited, 28 million 607 thousand 568 households (80.3%), 14% are uninhabited and 5.6% are used temporarily. During the past 20 years, the average number of occupants per household shows a gradual descent, from an average of 5 occupants in 1990 to 3.9 in 2010. In 2010, 6.2% of households in the country are without floor, which compares with 19.5% of households which had this characteristic in 1990. The electrical service in occupied private housing has a 97.8% coverage. The coverage of inhabited private houses that have piped water in 2010 is 91.5% The private homes that have drainage is 90.3% Goods in inhabited private houses 92.6% of occupied homes have television. Refrigerator and radio are available in 82.1% and 79.5%, respectively. 45% own a car. The landline telephone coverage is 43.2%, computer and internet is 29.4% and 21.3%, respectively. In 65.1% of occupied house one of the inhabitants had cellphone. Occupation and employment The economic participation rate of the population of 12 and over from the 2000 Census compared to 2010, reveals that labor supply increased from 49.3% to 52.6% In 2010, 60.9% of the working population was in the trade and services sector, 24.4% in the manufacturing industry and 13.4% in the agricultural sector. In 2000 the percentages were 53.8%, 27.7% and 16.1%, respectively. Education The census shows that 94.7% of the "6 to 14 years old" population attends school. The "15 to 24 years old" population attending school increased by 10 percentage points in the last 20 years. In 2010, 40.4% of people in this age attended school. The gap between men and women was also reduced, today 40.1% of women and 40.8% of men go to school. The illiteracy rate of "15 and over" population of in 2010 was 6.9%. In Mexico in 2010 the average schooling of the "15 and over" population was 8.6 years, an average about ninth grade. Health In 2010, 64.6% of the population declared to be entitled to recieve care by a public health institution. Disability The census identified 5 million 739 thousand 270 mexicans with physical or mental difficulty to perform daily activities, representing 5.1% of the total population. Marital status In the 1990-2010 period the married population showed a decrease, going from 45.8% to 40.5%, the percentage of single people also declined, going from 40.6% in 1990 to 35.2% in 2010. The population in free union nearly doubled, going from 7.4% to 14.4% in the same period. Native language In Mexico people who speak a native language represents 6.6% of the population. Religion In 2010, 83.9% of the population of "5 years and more declared to be Catholic, 7.6% Evangelical Protestants, 2.5% declared to have other religion and 4.6% reported having no religion. * This information may be found at: www.inegi.org.mx
